CANON PERSONALITY:

"Kiryu-kun... It hurts me to make the kind-hearted him trample on powerless little rabbits. Or just making him commit acts that an inhuman demon would."

Kuro stands as the pinnacle example of "looks can be deceiving," something that has followed him around since his childhood.

This is someone that says he's not good at smiling, that he'll never be rid of the furrow in his brow, and that always questions his underclassman about whether he's scary to them - and apologizes for it, even before they give him an answer in the negative. He even went so far as to go and watch yakuza films, to try and adhere a little more to the expectations of him being a super tough, scary guy.

There's always some basis in reality, of course - Kuro grew up with something of an ill temper, getting into fights and trouble long before attending Yumenosaki. This wasn't helped by the fact that people targeted him because of how he looked, thinking that he was more of a delinquent than he actually was. It resulted in a self fulfilling prophecy, in a way, one that he couldn't quite prevent, despite his best attempts. Before he knew it, he was swept up into the life, to the point that he would up as a leader of sorts, and it actually continued into his idol years when he helped to effectively destroy the dreams of numerous idols and units. He's a formiddable force, to be certain, to the point that his mere presence can become rather fearsome in an instant if he's in the thick of it, or perhaps provoked.

That ill temper certainly has faded, but there's no denying the fact that it still exists and will rear its head. (See: Shu bringing up his short temper, when Kuro starts getting fed up with his bratty behavior; Koga poking buttons and instigating, only to be met with a much bigger bite than he could chew.)

But, in the end, he's a lot more than just a temperamental looking thug. True, he isn't the brightest student - not at all by any means - and is no innocent angel, but...

Aware of his size and appearance, Kuro does his utmost best to try and soothe anyone's fears of him. Many underclassman, as well as general peers, find him so terrifying upon first meeting that they can barely speak. Students will even literally part like the Red Sea to get out of his way if they're in a large crowd.

But he's actually, generally, pretty mellow, to the point of being peacable, and once you get to know him he's extremely empathetic to those around him. Kuro's a little airheaded, one that doesn't quite understand why people do certain things and is arguably pretty thick, but his ability to read the mood is impressive. Especially when someone needs help - and, if that's the case, he'll do whatever he can to assist people that need aid. Occasionally, it's at the cost of himself, whether he overexerts himself or does things he probably shouldn't. (ie; eating Tetora's godawful cooking, which no one should consume, if only because it'll make his precious kohai happy. Bless him.) Despite his appearance, and his reputation, Kuro's a genuinely nice got at his core.

This leads into his loyalty, and sense of morals. It goes beyond him being a loyal unitmate and club leader, and so far as him being reliable to anyone that has earned his trust, mentorship, or even simple interest.

This even goes so far as to supposed rivals and enemies, although the people he cares about most take precedent. It takes a lot for him to rise to bait when it's being dangled in front of him, so he's actually pretty civil to opponents, going so far as to give them advice when they're facing off against one another. No matter whether it's a fight or a performance, or if they've already faced off against one another. He has no interest in needless fights. Even when it became obvious that Trickstar were going to shake up the world of Yumenosaki, Kuro kept their plans to himself, instead of sharing them with Keito or fine, deciding it would be better to let them continue their rebellion. All this, despite the fact they'd have to face Akatsuki to do it, as the #2 unit in the school and the attack dog of fine.

This leads into his loyalty, and sense of morals. It goes beyond him being a loyal unitmate and club leader, and so far as to him being reliable to anyone that has earned his trust or mentorship. Nevermind that Kuro isn't someone that holds grudges, even when he questions their morals or intentions, to the point that he allowed himself to be used for a long time as a weapon, despite his still continuing guilt over the entire debacle. There are better ways to spend your energy than holding grudges, like becoming stronger and learning from your defeat, or asking for help when you need it.

Here is where the road splits from that point of empathy and loyalty, though.

On the negative side, Kuro feels extreme guilt for the pain that he's caused a lot of people. He's hurt them, whether it was physically or emotionally. But he went along with it anyways, despite knowing that it was wrong. These were people that had never seen a fight, let alone been in one, and never seen someone so rough and tumble as him before. His conscience is a powerful force for him, and this is something that he struggles with, carries constantly. Despite his competitive nature, and his temper, Kuro is not someone that would willingly target an innocent person. They should be helped, allowed to grow stronger under a tough but not brutal guiding hand, not destroyed the way he hurt so many people.

And thus, the positive side. For someone you'd expect to be a guy full of proud machismo, Kuro's actually the type that says, constantly, that if you need help?

You ask for it.

Help is something that should be given when it's asked for, to the best of your ability. He insists to his underclassmen, and many of his peers, that if they need advice, or assistance, or even just someone to listen to them, that he will be there for them however he can. Some of this absolutely stems from the fact that he's an older brother, and this status bleeds into his other relationships, as well, to the point that he treats the main character and many of his underclassmen like younger siblings. (Or, even, his own children, in the very real cases of Tetora and Souma.) Let him be a caretaker, one that looks out for people and offers them what he can, despite his scary face and intimidating physique.

Most of the time, he's pretty calm about it, too, being as chill as he is. He's got an even sense of humor, too, dry with a little bit of teasing, but that teasing is focused more towards people that he's comfortable with and that he knows are comfortable with him. No matter what, though, he'll take that chill demeanor and caring nature (teasing or not) and focus it entirely on looking out for others, but generally speaking he won't be too overbearing. ... generally. Cherishing his sister the way he does, Kuro can absolutely become overbearing in his role as a caretaker. Again - his sister is usually the one to suffer this, to the point that he's a little bit obsessive, and Kuro just makes sure that others are taken care of in a more low key method, but it - it can become a bit Much.

He's really just a guy that likes cute things but is embarrassed walking into cutesty stores on his own. He doesn't even think he can design cute things, but he still works extremely hard - on them, and on any other project that he takes on, regardless of how much work it is. He doesn't complain about whatever task it is, even when it's something unfamiliar to him like acting or the like, because what gain is there to complaining? Work hard, and do your best.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
"Give me a slap in the face to keep me awake, Kurochin~♪" "If I hit you, you'd fly off out the window, I bet."

While his personality is softer than his appearance, his appearance definitely isn't all for show.

Kuro's father is a black belt in karate, and passed this education down to both of his children. Kuro himself is a black belt and the captain of the karate club, after further honing his skills throughout his (relatively rough and tumble) youth. He can literally throw Keito (who is 5'8"/178cm and 132lb/60kg) without much difficulty, allowing him to go an impressive distance accurately, and his kick sent Koga flying an even more impressive distance, with enough air time that Trickstar can hold a brief but detailed conversation.

He also apparently has a killing intent to go with this, one that he can mask so that he's pretty much undetectable until it's almost too late. There's enough force behind it and his attacks that, if he's dodged, even the wind off his movements can throw someone off.

On the flipside, he's ridiculously domestic. Kuro learned how to sew from his mother, after wanting to repair one of Shu's dolls when he'd damaged its clothes. He's since taken to mending clothes in a small amount of time (a bit of damage to a sleeve takes less than five minutes, for example), designing outfits (although he claims he has a hard time with "cute" things), and making a large majority of the outfits for the current units at Yumenosaki. There's also his ability to cook, and although it's not fine dining, he's nothing to shake a stick at.

Other skills include some knowledge of electronics, carpentry, and construction - he understands how a lot of sound equipment works, for example, and has done a lot of set design and building for stages.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Kuro Kiryu
AU AGE: 24
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Older, taller, buffer. His hair is naturally black and the red is a dye, with his eyes brown instead of the hazel/green thing he has in canon. Also, a couple tattoos to go with the delinquent thing.

AU HISTORY:
permission granted from everyone mentioned.

★ Rec native, raised by parents who always had kind of a rocky relationship, to the point that he has at least one half brother, Kazuma Kiryu ( [personal profile] judgementkazzy ).
★ for the most part, had a fairly average childhood, although he was pretty proactive against bullies.
★ by proactive I mean he punched bullies rather routinely, even when they were bigger than him, though that didn't last particularly long.
★ due to his anger problems as a child, his mother recommended that he enroll in karate. it also gave him a means of better defending people when the occasion arose.
★ as his family grew, so did his protectiveness, going to include blood and forged siblings throughout his childhood. he was, effectively, made for being a big brother, as utterly devoted to the people he cares about as he is.

★ this included Nazuna Nito ( [personal profile] pronounces ), who his "friends" heckled one day. rather than let them, he told them to knock it off and went to apologize for it. Kuro, 1. found out Nazuna wasn't a girl, 2. became Nazuna's best friend in his childhood. rather than let him remain a caged bird, he snuck him out of his house and practices to let him be a kid, or at least until Nazuna ghosted Kuro when he was 12 and Kuro was 14.
★ Kuro continued to send him holiday and birthday texts until just four years ago.

★ and then, everything else that could go wrong went wrong.
★ his mom got sick, and it put some more strain on the family, making things fairly tense for Kuro as his responsibilities increased.
★ because they always kind of had a rocky relationship, it won't come as much of a shock that Kuro's dad bailed on them when things really got rough.
★ to try and find the money and resources to help take care of the family, Kuro fell into an even rougher crowd in high school. he started skipping classes, fell into delinquency, got into very much a lot of trouble. honestly he hated himself during the entire stint, and kind of still hates himself for what he did.
★ a lot of it was petty crime, but some people did get hurt, as he was utilized for his particular skillset and size to intimidate others and get things done.
★ some people he wound up involved with were May Sfondi ( [personal profile] me_matey ) and Kamui Brisby ( [personal profile] foeyay ).

★ but then mom died! whomp.
★ rather than let his family be split up, he uh. dropped out of high school at 17 and started working whatever jobs he could to actually support them, on top of the more questionable (aka illegal) activities he was dealing in.
★ this left Kuro effectively dropping off the face of the Earth, cutting contact with about 85% of the people he knew before all of this went pear-shaped.

★ after a while, he managed to kind of... get out of the shitpot by kicking it down.
★ he did this by getting back into karate, honestly, and starting to do competitions again. he won prizes and trophies that helped to supplement his odd jobs, and, eventually, something more permanent happened.
★ after meeting Tatsuo Kihara ( [personal profile] thisloveisjustice ) at one such competition, he managed to befriend the older man and actually wound up working alongside him at the Utsuki Dojo, where he began to teach Beginner Youth classes.
★ this let him cut ties with the gangs he dealt with, a reflection of how he'd cut contact with everyone else when his mother had died.

AU PERSONALITY:

🏵 For starters, Kuro is arguably the most tone deaf human being on the planet. Between this and his lifestyle, where he had no time and way too much responsibility, he's had absolutely no interest in becoming an idol or a "personality" as it were. He's not interested in the limelight, least of all in such a way that would put him on a stage. A karate competition or class is one thing, but this would likely lead to some variety of stage fright if pressed.

🏵 Also he can't sew for shit. He can patch some minor things up, but there are no amazing designs here for him. The fact people can do that from scratch amazes him to no end, compared to canon, where it takes him .5 seconds to do a stitch to fix something.

🏵 While he still carries a great deal of guilt from his time on the wrong side of the law, Kuro's morals are a little bit looser. His nose is cleaner, sure, and he has a good life now, but he's not against doing some questionable things so long as no one comes out of it hurt. Breaking and entering, trespassing, minor theft... he might not go out of his way to do anything below board, but he's not shy about doing it when the occasion presents itself and it might come in handy/be necessary. And because he still has connections to some people from his past, he's willing to turn a blind eye when they're the ones doing something wrong, allowing them to get away with a lot and covering for them when they need it.

🏵 Kuro's dad in canon is such a hard worker that Kuro rarely ever sees him, versus the dad he had in Recollé before the guy bailed on their family. It would be difficult to say that Kuro has "daddy issues," but he's got a few hangups regarding abandonment between him and Nazuna ghosting him. Being ditched like that stings, and the idea of anyone abandoning someone they supposedly cares about is a sore spot for him. (It may even result in him getting angry, should he find out someone is doing what his deadbeat dad did.) To compensate for it, Kuro does his utmost best to keep constant contact with the people that he's friends with, those that he considers family, whether it's by blood or not.

🏵 Tying into his dad's abandonment and his mother's death, Kuro grew up a lot sooner than in canon and has had longer to let it really settle on his shoulders. His responsibilities are a lot heavier, and he's pretty damn tired a lot of the time. It'll leave him running himself a little ragged, when things are busiest or the most stressful, sure, but he hides it as best he can with his dry humor and focusing everything on taking care of others.
